They allow inland navigation on smaller rivers and canals and have thus created profitable and environmentally friendly means of transportation. The different types of lock gates used to be operated by mechanical drives. However, with the advancing development of hydraulics, new locks were gradually equipped with hydraulic drives and later on old mechanical drives were replaced accordingly. Good examples among others are the locks on the Kiel Canal as well as on the rivers Danube, Main, Neckar and Mosel.
